Tyler Man Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison for Aggravated Assault of a Public Servant

Tyler, TX - Jonathan Lizarraga-Romero of Tyler was sentenced on April 19th in the 114th District Court of Smith County for two instances of aggravated assault of a public servant. The case, heard in Judge Austin Reeve Jackson’s court, stems from an incident in April of 2022 where Lizarraga-Romero led multiple law enforcement agencies on a high-speed chase across both Smith and Cherokee Counties. After officers were able to corner Mr. Lizarraga-Romero in a Tyler Apartment complex, the defendant shot at officers as they attempted to detain him.

Mr. Lizarraga-Romero, who was facing a potential life sentence, pleaded guilty to these offenses and asked that a jury determine the appropriate punishment. After a two-day trial, the jury sentenced Mr. Lizarragga-Romero to a term of 30 years’ confinement.
